PDP-8's were 12 bit word lengths,  the PDP-7 was either 12 or 18 bit.
Digital liked to use 6 bit characters, lower case and letters.  If you
wanted to change the case, you needed to precede the 6 bit character with a
Shift In.

I.E.  ixUn and Posix have been condemned to using two character lower case
command names because ixUn was written for a legacy machine.  ixUn today
still carries forward characteristics of that old legacy box.
