HP seems to have left many users in the lurch after promising to port
MPE to IA-64 and then reneging without giving HP 3000 users a
clear migration path. As an interim measure they could have made an
announcement that they would allow the latest version of MPE to run
on an HP-9000 when sales of the 3000 are disontinued. This is a
no-brainer
as the onlly thing impeding this is an artificial setup preventing it
now.
This was done to prevent users from using the cheaper 9000 with MPE.
With support for MPE disappering in 2006, it would make no sense to
continue this prohbition. It would give HP 3000 users some breathing
room
to consider what they might replace MPE (the 300) with.
