The Probasco Chair is seeking faculty or administrators to critique
Congressman Van Hilleary’s views on taxation. The fall 2002 Burkett
Miller Distinguished Lecture Series will feature United States
Congressman Van Hilleary, representative of Tennessee’s Fourth
Congressional District and the Republican candidate for the governor of
Tennessee. Congressman Hilleary will speak on the topic of economic
competitiveness of the state of Tennessee, Thursday, October 3, 2002, at
noon in the Roland Hayes Hall.

Hilleary states that “Tennessee must maintain a competitive tax
structure, continue to build a solid infrastructure, and work to improve
our educational system to meet the needs of a high-tech, market-based
economy” and he plans to speak on how this may be accomplished.
Hilleary’s views on economic issues are widely available from his
congressional voting record and significant media coverage in national
magazines and news services. His views or the Tennessee tax situation
have received significant media coverage.

We are seeking a faculty member or administrator to serve as commentator
for this lecture and are particularly interested in those with
substantiated views differing from the speaker’s. We seek logical,
established arguments in support of more taxes and greater tax reform.
Commentary must be of broadcast quality, and an honorarium will be
provided.

Expressions of interest should be directed to [log in to unmask] and should
indicate the faculty member’s area of expertise and experience.
