The Probasco Chair is seeking faculty or administrators to critique Congressman Van Hilleary’s views on taxation. The fall 2002 Burkett Miller Distinguished Lecture Series will feature United States Congressman Van Hilleary, representative of Tennessee’s Fourth Congressional District and the Republican candidate for the governor of Tennessee. Congressman Hilleary will speak on the topic of economic competitiveness of the state of Tennessee, Thursday, October 3, 2002, at noon in the Roland Hayes Hall. Hilleary states that “Tennessee must maintain a competitive tax structure, continue to build a solid infrastructure, and work to improve our educational system to meet the needs of a high-tech, market-based economy” and he plans to speak on how this may be accomplished. Hilleary’s views on economic issues are widely available from his congressional voting record and significant media coverage in national magazines and news services. His views or the Tennessee tax situation have received significant media coverage. We are seeking a faculty member or administrator to serve as commentator for this lecture and are particularly interested in those with substantiated views differing from the speaker’s. We seek logical, established arguments in support of more taxes and greater tax reform. Commentary must be of broadcast quality, and an honorarium will be provided.
