To answer Mary's question, yes Red Bank has a recycling center. It is located past the "old BiLo" or actually next to the Fire Hall.

On the subject of recycling I would like a question. I live in one of many
apartments in the Red Bank that does not have recycling available. I have no
idea if Red Bank has a recycling center. I am very impressed with recycling
center on Signal Mountain. I would love to recycle my papers, plastic
bottles, etc. Does anyone know if Red Bank has a recycle center? If they
do, I don't feel the city makes it very well known.

When I visit my mother is a small town upstate NY I notice each apartment
complex has a recycle bin for papers, platics, glass, etc. I think Red Bank
a long way to go in their recycle efforts.

Thank you
Mary

Subject: [UTCSTAFF] FW: Recycling at UTC

Colleagues:

The unsolicited message included below was sent to me by the mother of a UTC
student, whom I do not know. I find this message troubling from my
perspective as a professor in the Biological and Environmental Sciences
department (one of the largest departments on our campus), where we
emphasize the many needs for recycling. But Iım particularly concerned
about this issue in terms of just how we look at the educational experience
our students gain on our campus. Arenıt we supposed to be a beacon on the
hill, showing everyone who steps on our campus the best practices and
principles for a good life? It seems that over the years Iıve heard a lot
about the fact that UTC recycles, and I actually tried to become involved in
the process (serving on a committee five or six years ago) to try to help
make it work. From the message below, itıs obvious that, in essence, UTC
has no recycling program. I know about mixed paper, cardboard, etc. from
faculty offices, but in the dorms where UTC could reinforce critical
lessons we teach a good number of our students, we let the students down.
Itıs almost like the dorms are a different place (Place Properties?) from
UTC. I sure hope that Chancellor recently initiated, campus-wide review
will include ways we can ³practice what we preach² and show our students
that a critical societal responsibility, such as recycling, is part of the
matrix that is UTC. Students are smart, and their parents will always ask
questions. The questions asked by this studentıs mother could result in
another student deciding not to attend UTC sometime in the future. We must
be certain that UTC is thinking about the entire educational process as our
students move towards graduation.

Take care,

Henry Spratt

Subject: Recycling at UTC

Dear Dr. Spratt - I'm not sure who to contact about this, but I saw one of
your interests was bio- remediation, so I thought I'd start with you, (you
can forward me on if need be.) My daughter is a sophmore at UTC- She's
lived in 2 different dorms on campus, and now lives off. When ever I have
visited her, I ask her about places to recycle their (her, and fellow
students) plastic, glass, cardboard, etc, she doesn't have a clue. Are
there recycling options available on campus? Does Chattanooga have
curb-side recycling? Is there effort being made to educate incoming
students about caring for the environment and how to recycle? Please let me
know, or forward this on to whom ever might have answers - A concerned Mom
