Please read the following message from YOUR Department of Public Safety.
We want you to arrive alive so slow down and wear your seatbelts.

Speed Enforcement Campaign on Campus

Effective Friday, April 6, 2001, the UTC Department of Public Safety will
begin another speed reduction campaign. On April 6, 2001 and Monday, April
9, 2001, you will see our officers out with the "Your Speed Is" sign on
campus streets. Beginning Wednesday, April 11, 2001, our Police Officers
will perform selective enforcement and issue speed violators a warning or
Sessions Court ticket. The fines for speeding in Chattanooga are
significant! Speeds in excess of 10 miles over the limit have a mandatory
$116.00 fine. The fine for traveling 40 miles per hour over the limit is
$166.00. The fines may be enhanced if the driver is also cited for
Reckless Driving.

The goal of this campaign is to reinforce the speed limits and reduce the
hazards to pedestrians on campus. In Tennessee, pedestrians have the
right-of-way in crosswalks. Drivers who violate the pedestrian right-of-way
law can be punished by a fine and up to 11 months and 29 days in jail.

In conjunction with the speed enforcement and reduction campaign, the
Department of Public Safety will be educating drivers and passengers on the
need to use seat belts. Tennessee has only a 59% seat belt usage rate, one
of the lowest in the country. To help increase seat belt usage, Tennessee
will implement a statewide "Click It or Ticket" campaign. Beginning this
Memorial Day weekend, Tennessee law enforcement agencies statewide will
educate drivers and enforce seat belt laws. As a reminder, all children
must use child safety restraints or seat belts when traveling in a motor
vehicle.

Our Police Officers will be most visible on East Fifth Street where
pedestrians are especially vulnerable to traffic violators. If you have
any questions, please don't hesitate to contact any UTC Police or Security
Officer, Chief Dale McNeely or Deputy Chief Carol Rhan.
