It is a bittersweet task to inform the campus that Leslie Pusey, UTC’s first Director of the Office of National Scholarships, will be leaving UTC on June 30; she has accepted a position as Assistant Director of Student Awards, Initiatives, and Research at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia where she will focus exclusively on helping students apply for nationally competitive awards. It also gets Leslie a bit closer to her Maryland home.

We’ve been very fortunate to have Leslie as our founding director of this office. Before Leslie was hired in January of 2018, UTC students applying for national scholarships largely had to identify these opportunities themselves and, while supported by members of the university community, they did not have the benefit afforded them when a specific person is tasked with navigating this complex field of opportunities. Leslie came to UTC from the University of South Dakota Honors Program where she had worked tangentially with nationally competitive awards. Thankfully, she accepted the challenge of building something new here at UTC and has greatly succeeded.

Since 2018, we have seen a number of students win awards that no other UTC student has ever won. By creating a culture that fosters support for these students, Leslie has greatly increased the number who apply as well as the percentage who win. In 2021-2022, for instance, 7 UTC students won Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships which meant that 70% of the UTC applicants for that award that year won. Under Leslie’s leadership, UTC saw its first UTC Fulbright recipient in over 50 years, followed by a Fulbright Master’s awardee, and seven more UTC awardees and alternates. In 2021-2022, 44 students completed applications for nationally competitive scholarships and 14 received them. Having worked now with hundreds of students, Leslie has initiated nothing short of a culture shift on our campus: namely, it is now understood that UTC students will apply for and winhighly competitive awards. I consider that to be her most remarkable achievement. Please wish her well!

The Honors College will be posting an advertisement for this position early in July; we encourage your questions and applications once the ad is posted. This will be a national search and the successful candidate will be a full-time employee of the Honors College, with responsibilities in both honors and as Director of the Office of National Scholarships.
