I think you'll find it's a lot more than marketing. One example is when we
"absorbed" an HP3000 Micro XE (at one of our remote plants) into our HP3000
948. The Micro XE is the old, CISC style of HP3000, whilst the 948 is the
newer RISC style of computer. After backing up all the information on the
XE, we disconnected the disk drives, transported them to our corporate
headquarters, and plugged them into the 948. These were the 7937 drives
that use HP-IB connectors and were 100% compatible with MPE/V (CISC-mode)
and MPE/iX (RISC-mode) operating systems. And I am sure that if I had an
HP-IB card in our 918 that they would still work (under MPE/iX 5.5).
Plus, as someone else already mentioned, there is the object-code
compatibility issue. I have programs that were written on CISC machines
many years ago that still run on MPE/iX, without recompiling. These are the
original executables that ran on the CISC machines and now run on the RISC
O/S.
