i don't think we can do secure ftp.  however, i think lars will say that with
ssl and java (and probably perl) you could 'roll your own' solution.  i don't
know how desirable that is....

otoh, many places (including longs) has a secure ftp server.  (given gm's
size, i wonder if such a thing is available.)  so mpe data headed to an
external vendor is shipped to the ftp server (and normally encrypted in the
process) and waits until its picked up.  basically the same process happens
for in-bound data.           - d
