Doug mentions "The earth opening up and swallowing..."  This reminded me of
the big Alaska earthquake in 1964.  My father had a friend whose daughter
lived in Fairbanks.  She was home with the kids when the quake struck.  She
gathered up the children and hurried outside, only to realize one of the
children did not make it outside with them.  Her older son went back into
the house to find the missing child. Neither of them was ever found.

I believe the Seattle area sits on the same fault(?)that caused the Alaska
quake.
