I forgot to add,

Sometimes the backspace *IS NOT THE CHARACTER DELETE CHARACTER*.

In such situations, it would be realllllly wrong to treat it as a
destructive backspace!

(E.g., the default on most Unix systems is that DEL is the character
delete and a backspace is ... well, it's a *back space*)
