This one strains my brain for details, but way back in the classic days,
there was a product available whereby the 3000 would "emulate" an IBM 3705
communcations controller so that you could have a remote 3270 cluster
controller connected directly to the 3000 (via an INP card as I recall)
over a synchronous communications link.  You could then use the 3000 from
your basic IBM 327x terminal.
 
I want to say this was called MTS/3000 but I could well be wrong; I tend to
only remember the products we actually used :-)
