Craig,

We had something similar a few months back. Initially I thought that the
perceived 'hang' was caused by some scanning of the devices on our network
that had begun that day and expected it to stop once I asked our network
folks to exempt our HP3K (WhatsUpGold was being used and trying to
establish a connection using Telnet and FTP). The problem reappeared,
however, a few days later and it actually caused a system hang. The memory
dump showed a large number of I/Os queued against a specific device and we
started down the path of replacing it.

It turned out that two disc drives, somehow, would go to sleep. They would
not respond when 'hailed' by the OS. Once we'd 'pop' any of the devices on
that chain, the 'dormant' device would respond and the system would
continue without any data losses. If fact I was able to perform a couple
of full back ups in anticipation of the disk replacement.

While working in the computer room and while waiting for some memory
diagnostic to finish (at that point we had not pinpointed that it was a
drive issue) the lights 'timed out' in the computer room and while waiting
in the darkness, while another person went to turn them on, we noticed that
one of the drives would not respond to the periodic 'hailing' by the OS.
The darkened room helped us observe that while each drive on the chain
would have its access light illuminated, when hailed by the OS, the
'suspect' drive's light would not.

We have not had any similar problems since that drive was replaced.

Regards
Paul Christidis
