Mirror, mirror on the disk,
will this truly lessen risk?
Or something like that :-)
I've just been handed the job of exploring Disk Mirroring on the 3000.
We've got about 10G of space currently on the system, currently a little over
half full. But we need to go to Fast-Wide SCSI and if we're going to change
anyway, why not go to mirroring, so the plan is to buy 10 2G hotswap drives and
a couple of Jamaica boxes to put them in. In exploring Mirrored Disk/iX, I ran
across the possibility of doing a very-short-downtime backup by splitting the
mirrored volumes. It looks like a pretty good option, all things considered,
but one thing yet stands in my way. I am informed that I cannot mirror LDEV 1.
If not, then what happens to the short-downtime backup? I still have to have
folks off the system, at least until LDEV 1 is backed up, don't I? Does that
mean that I have to have them off for the whole thing? Also, I'm using
RoadRunner (which I know does work with the mirror/split thing) and we do a
verify pass after the backup. Does the verify also have to happen before I
release the split?
Would be glad for any advice, warnings or other wisdom.
Thanks,
Ted

It wouild be very discouraging if somewhere down the line you could ask a
computer if the Riemann hypothesis is correct and it said, `Yes, it is true,
but you won't be able to understand the proof.'
