Re:

I downloaded/unzipped the entire simh package (about 35 MB in 905 files).
That created the directory simh-master.
Then, from Terminal:
cd simh-master
make -j 8
(that compiles up to 8 things at a time … omit the “-j 8” on smaller systems)
The compiles took about 57 seconds.
or, to compile just the HP 3000 emulator:
make hp3000
That creates BIN/hp3000 in simh-master.
(By this time, I renamed “simh-master” to “simh” :)
cd to the whatever directory you put the 32002-11018_Rev-2548 zip and
mpe-vr-software-kit.zip files in. Unzip them.
(I put them in simh/HP3000 … perhaps not the best choice.)
The latter file has mpe-auto.sim, which is the easiest method of
running MPE.
(assuming simh-master/BIN is in your path (or simh/BIN :))
hp3000 mpe-auto.sim
That suns the emulator, boots into MPE, and you’re logged on as OPERATOR.SYS.
Note: the readme file mentions that the date is wrong, because that version
of MPE V is not Y2K compliant.
A control-E interrupts the emulated session and comes back to the emulator prompt.
At that point you can attach a tape image, if you wish. If you then “CONTINUE”,
MPE will get an AVR for the tape!
BTW, initial testing seems to indicate that the E.01.00 version of MPE V doesn’t
like the CM STORE tapes created by MPE/iX 7.5. (Assuming, of course, I didn’t
screw up my tape -> disk process :)
I modified my tapesd utility to have a “-simh” option.
