If your original ScanJet (9190A) is like mine, the interface is
bidirectional parallel, not SCSI. I'm using the 88290A card in the
PC because it was in the box with my scanner. Some other parallel cards
do have a jumper to make them "bi-directional", but I haven't tried them.
Of course, this means that I'm dedicating an I/O card to the scanner as
you were trying to avoid, but I don't believe that this flavor of parallel
allows for addressing a multi device bus.
