Earthquake update

Pierce County emergency management officials are continuing to assess damages from the 6.8 magnitude earthquake centered near Anderson Island in Pierce County. An aftershock of a magnitude 3.4 was felt early this morning at about 1:10 a.m. This secondary quake was centered near McNeil Island, within two miles of the initial epicenter.

Injuries
As of mid-morning 51 injuries have been reported in Pierce County, three of which are considered critical. Elderly individuals who fell during the quake suffered the critical injuries.

Road and Bridge Status
Washington 302 at milepost 4.7 to Wright Bliss Road on Key Peninsula dropped two feet and is closed. The road at milepost 5 is closed due to a landslide. A detour is being made.
State Route 512 overpass at State Route 410 is closed.
Chambers Creek Bridge closed

Structural damage
Seven homes may be evacuated near Salmon Beach. Geologists surveying the area are worried that aftershocks or rain may loosen from 10,000 to 20,000 cubic meters of soil on the upslope. Building inspectors from the City of Tacoma are responding to survey the homes and will keep us posted on whether or not an evacuation will be necessary. Yesterday, one cabin in the area slid down the hillside and four others were evacuated.
