I also recall a bug in FORMSPEC resulting in such a result.

Instead of looking for the appropriate patch, an option you could try 
is to use a technique for field security that was used in FORMSPEC 
prior to the availablity of the "S"  field-type option together with 
the correct updated HP terminal.

That technique involves defining the initial value of the field as an 
invokation of a non-existant alternate character set and shifting to it.

This is done by initializing the field value to a string of escape 
sequences that do the following:

1. define the non-existant alternate character set. (whose escape 
sequence is contained in any HP terminal technical reference manual 
or Reflection Technical Reference manual - neither of which I have 
handy at the moment)
2. shift in to the alternate character set (which, I believe is the 
'cntrl-n' key combination - 'cntl-o' shifts back out to the original 
character set).

Make the changes, recompile and you should be good to go.
