It's about time to reiterate my dealings with mail delivery problems to our
list subscribers, especially since the bounces have been unusually high in
recent days and I've had to take corrective actions...

If you're reading the comp.sys.hp.mpe newsgroup, stop now and save time.
If you're on the hp3000-L mailing list, read on. Mail lists are not without
problems, most notably mail bounces, temporary "undeliverable" messages,
full mailboxes with commercial ISPs, and a whole gamut of other causes.
While many listowners delete problem subscribers without question, I will
generally set you to "digest" mode so at least the bounces are reduced to
one a day. If those continue to bounce, you are removed from the list.

If you don't get mail for a day or more, you can always re-subscribe. If
you find yourself in digest mode, you can always reset it (mail to
[log in to unmask] with message 'set hp3000-l nodigest'). I try to
make sure nobody gets deleted inadvertently but no system is perfect.

If you change your e-mail address, be sure to resubscribe under the new
address. I've had numerous "unknown host" bounces I suspect are obsolete
mail gateways. If you simply forward things, it works fine until the
gateway goes away.

Lastly... unless you have a *very* intelligent answering agent, please do
not use "vacation" or "auto-reply" programs -- if you have an intelligent
one, set it to ignore mail from this list.
