In the 2000 election the Democrats ran an ad in Texas attacking Bush for
the horrific murder of James Byrd Jr. This was the black gentleman who
was dragged to death behind a pickup driven by three white pieces of
fertilizers in Jasper, Texas. The trio was apprehended and two of them
are on death row, with the third one in prison for life, no parole.

Then-governor Bush had refused to support a legislation (which George
Bush said he would sign if it came to him, but the bill died in the
Texas Senate) that in effect said that murdering some people was more
reprehensible than murdering other people and should thus be punished
more harshly. He (and many others including me) cannot figure out what
is a harsher punishment than the death penalty and why killing Tom
demands a more severe punishment than killing Dick or Harry.

However, the NAALCP put out an ad that was played at nauseam in Texas
and other places in which the daughter of James Bird was explaining that
by refusing to support the bill, George Bush was the equal of the
scumbags who murdered her father.

Also, George Soros, the owner of the Democratic Party, has been
comparing Bush to Hitler. Indeed, at moveon.org, another George Soros
property, they had ads showing Hitler and Bush, one morphing into the
other.

Who can forget the usual Democrat shouts calling Republicans various
things like baby killer, polluters, Nazis and other nice things and
accusing them of wanting to kill old people after throwing them out on
the streets and yanking their medicine away from them.

As for Max Cleland, read this: http://tinyurl.com/637m2 and this:

You haven't been paying attention, have you?

This sort of thing has become standard right-wing, Republican fare over
the
last 20 years. It began with Bush I's preying on the fears of
excessively
fearful people with the use of the Willie Horton ads and has continued
up to and
throughout all of the last presidential election.

In the last mid-term election cycle, I happened to be in Atlanta for a
week,
and to be absolutely honest I was shocked by the level of vitriol that
the
Republican Party of Georgia was issuing, attacking the patriotism of Max
Cleland,
a Viet Nam triple amputee. The ads were so shocking and so mean-spirited
that
I was embarassed to be registered as a Republican, and I gave serious
though
to changing my party affliation. Saxby Chambliss was the beneficiary of
that
hate-filled nonsense, but only to the point that every time I see him on
TV
now, I see a man covered in excrement, someone unworthy to have been
elected to
the US Senate, if for no other reason than he was associated with those
ads.

This now-persistent Republican tactic is, as John McCain has said,
exceedingly dishonest and dishonorable.
