I've had $500 and $1,000 bills, and have seen $5,000 and $10,000
notes. These indeed were released to circulation (if you could afford
it...) and your bank may have had them in their vault, but could certainly
order
one or more for you from the Federal Reserve system. Only the $100,000 note
was never released for the general public, but rather used between Federal
Reserve banks for transactions.

None of these large bills have been produced since the series of 1934
I believe. And part of why there were removed from the Federal
Reserve system and your bank can no longer order one for you was
related to illegal activities, such as drugs/etc. where large sums of cash
were involved. It's harder to conceal $100,000 in $100 bills than it is
with $5,000 bills.... Also, banks were required to report cash transactions
that were > $10,000 so the Feds could see if individuals were dealing with
large amounts of cash on an ongoing basis and it wasn't something that
could relate to their business role. This was also tied to monitoring for the
potential of organized crime groups.
