I am re-naming the file with the transfer as in:
get "a file name ### with spaces.txt" "newname"
It just does not like the spaces which is interesting because the manual
says:
File names can begin with, and contain, any of the following characters:
a--z A--Z, 0--9, _, .
Yet I can transfer files that contain the "#" character and "#" is not in
the list above.

MPE doesn't allow files, even in the posix space, to have embedded spaces.
In fact the posix restrictions on MPE cause this issue to be discussed

We have a client that creates files on an FTP server that has spaces in the
file names. I've tried using single and double quotes around the name and
nothing seems to work. Has anyone run into this?
We have several workarounds but I've got to think that there is some syntax
that will work directly.
The HP ARPA File Transfer Protocol User's Guide for MPE was no help. There
was no mention of spaces in filenames. The HPUX ftp manual specifically
states to use quotes.
