Per John Korb's note...
My employer used the GE terminals as access to a time sharing system. I
believe they ran at 30 characters per second rather than the 10 cps of a
traditional ASR33 teletype.
The printing was pretty quiet considering the speed---but the clicka
clicka stayed in your head all day.
The paper tape punch, going at 30 cps, was incredibly noisy.
Our machine was pretty reliable.
Speaking of teletypes, I know someone who threw out a model 33. I
wanted to keep it for sentimental value (spent much time on them), but I
have no room for it. I think they can be hooked up as a terminal to a
PC (using a "black box" to convert the 20mA signal into RS232 for a PC's
serial port), but that's some work, and maintaining the mechanicals of
the TTY obviously are difficult.
