You won't see a substantial improvement in backup speed unless (a) you
have enough channel capacity to support a higher transfer rate, and (b)
you switch to 120M tapes. 120M tapes are actually written at a higher
density than 60- and 90-meter tapes, which means a higher transfer rate.

On our Macs, we see 500KB/s using 120M tapes, but about 300KB/s with 90M
tapes. (This compares to about 175KB/s for DDS-1. It also compares to
781KB/s for a 7980A, but of course the overall transfer rate to a 7980 is
dependent on how fast the operator can change tapes. Even a good operator
can't keep the average rate much above 600KB/s.)
