If you could find out, it may be worth more than a million!  While, as you
imply, connecting a 32550N to a 9K is extremely simply, such is not the case
with the 3000.  The problem has often here been bewailed, but resolution not.
 
The line from HP is that to ensure the optimum reliability and performance
(that we expect from the 3k) that something else must be added to the
mechanisms.  So a generic SCSI-2 drive, while having electrical
compatibility with the 3000 does not have 'brains' to do the job.
 
Too bad.  A choice would be nice.
