Another example of what you have to look forward to.
AFAIK, the "eval" function is used extensively in Unix
scripts. And if this isn't bad enough, there is another
patch that has this same problem behavior, PHCO_22712

Patch PHCO_23873 has a new warning
NOTE: HP no longer recalls problem patches, but instead issues
warnings, like this one, that describe the problems and suggest
possible courses of action.
Dear Richard Gambrell,
Hewlett-Packard has issued a new warning for the following patch:
PHCO_23873 : s700_800 11.00 sh-posix(1) cumulative patch
Please read the "Warning Description" below to determine whether it is
necessary for you take any actions.
Warning Description:
- PHCO_22537 introduced behavior that may cause shell scripts
utilizing the shell special built-in command 'eval' to abort
prematurely. Depending on the shell script, this may cause
unexpected results.
- The expected behavior is that the shell may abort if the
special built-in command 'eval' returns a syntax error, but
not if another type of error is returned. PHCO_22537 causes
the shell to abort if the 'eval' special built-in command
returns any type of error.
- The same behavior is exhibited with superseding patch
PHCO_23873.
- If you utilize scripts that depend on the special built-in
command 'eval' and this behavior is not acceptable, HP
recommends removing PHCO_22537 and PHCO_23873 from all
systems on which these scripts are executed. The patches
should also be removed from software depots used to install
patches on these systems.
- The previous patch, PHCO_20816, does not exhibit this same
behavior. If you choose to remove PHCO_22537 and PHCO_23873,
to ensure as many known issues as possible are addressed HP
recommends that PHCO_20816 be installed after these patches
are removed. If PHCO_20816 was installed prior to PHCO_22537
and PHCO_23873, it will automatically be restored when these
patches are removed and it will not need to be reinstalled.
- PHCO_23873 is included in the following Support Plus Patch
Bundle:
Sep 2001: QPK1100,B.11.00.54.7
If you have any questions, please contact the HP Response Center.
