We have this patch on our 979/400 and 987/200 boxes, one using DLT7000 and the other DLT4000. You don't have to use 3rd party backup software either on either DLT model. We're using TurboSTORE True Online 24x7 Backup which did not work prior to the patch. Now it works great! [We previously had only the DLT4000 and had used 3rd party software; the patch makes the 3rd party software unnecessary.]

You most certainly can - with a few patches - but you do need F/W SCSI and
at least one patch is still in beta.  We have recently put in a 979/200 with
DLT7000.
