You critique is valid.  But, do not beleive that these drawbacks are
limited to the HP-3000.  We were shot down in our migration from 3000s
to HP-UX and went to Data General Aviion Unix.
(They are one of the only vendors that
had a Unix box as powerfull as HPs top of the line).
 
DG has every problem you mentioned above.  Although DG and Sun both claim
that thier optical data warehouse systems work.  In practice, they fall well
short of what I would bank my reputation on.
 
The lack of enthusiasm towards the 3000 is disapointing.  But, I have been
getting used to them disapointing me for over 1/2 a decade now. ;-/
