This has been an ongoing dispute since 1973. Things really heated up this
summer when some Canadian soldiers built an Inuit stone marker and erected a
Canadian flag. Then a week later the Canadian Defence Minister visited the
island. Then the deputy premier of Greenland said that Canadian forces were
occupying part of Greenland.

Currently there is a Danish patrol cutter en route to the island, but the
Danish Foreign Minister has stated, "I have instructed the ship to sail
there, but they will not go ashore tearing down (the Canadian) flag and
replacing it with a new one. It would be a somewhat childish (behaviour)
between two NATO allies."

rival claims in the Arctic triggered by the threat of melting ice.

The move follows a spat between Canada and Denmark, over an uninhabited
rock called Hans Island in the eastern Arctic region.
