The difference between Speedware and Cognos are significant. It really
depends on what you want to do and which versions and applications of
Speedware and Cognos you are talking about. Neither one is cheap.
However, if you are just creating reports, Cognos used to sell Quiz only with
the dictionary. So it wasn't quite as expensive. Don't know if they still do.

You can run quiz from source without compiling and even deploy uncompiled
source for end users to use with a NOLIST option. This avoids having to
recompile all programs every time you get an update.

You can create individual reports in Quiz, but Speedware requires an
application to run through. So to generate a quick and simple report totally
unrelated to any other programs Quiz is more convenient than Speedware.

Syntax wise, Speedware is more SQL-like but it is NOT straight SQL. Cognos
Quiz is a language in and of its own. Simple to learn and very powerful.
Personally I find Cognos Quiz easier for quick reporting. One thing that
Cognos Quiz does that I like is the self defined subfile that can be read like a
table and linked to tables in the database. It's like it is the dictionary without
having to put it in the dictionary. Opening and linking tables works very
differently between Cognos and Speedware.

Cognos QTP is great for data repair.
