Ummmm --- I feel a little stupid here.  After all the occasions that this
has been mentioned on the list, I fell into the trap of trying to copy a
non-bytestream file and it didn't occur to me until Greg asked me
point-blank!  Thanks, Greg.  I guess that's why we're all here on the
list...
