Local Northern California INTEREX User Groups CALBAY and BAYRUG Co-present "Is Linux in YOUR Future?" Tuesday June 15, 1999 1-6pm Oak Room, HP-Cupertino Join CALBAY and BAYRUG for this FREE half-day seminar addressing the hottest new arrival on the OS platform - Linux. Is it a fad or a fixture? A technical marvel or just technobabble? Does it belong in your Enterprise? How do you make it work in your environment? What are the technical considerations? Bring your manager! We start with a general strategic overview and discussion, then dive into more technical details. There will be speakers, a mid-afternoon snack, news, networking with fellow CALBAY and BAYRUG members, door prizes, and more! Presentations: Linux - What It Is and HP's Linux Strategy and Program This presentation will introduce you to Linux. It will include a discussion of growth drivers and inhibitors. It will also describe HP's position on Linux. Is it all hype or does it represent the next great approach whose time has come? The presentation will also provide an overview of what HP is doing to respond to the market opportunity in terms of systems, software and services offerings today and plans for the future. Cygnus and GNUPro - A Bridge to Linux Michael will discuss the benefits of open-source software and commercial quality tools that facilitate the development of applications deployed on Linux, HP-UX and Windows NT systems. Specifically, Michael will discuss the role that Cygnus plays in creating and supporting open-source software, including Cygnus' work on the GNU compiler and debugger-- software critical to development of Linux based operating systems and applications -- and how Cygnus is working with HP to improve the quality of the GNUPro software tools for HP platforms. HP Linux Workstation Plans and Directions This discussion will explore the movement of Linux beyond its current strength as a server Operating System. Specifically, it will focus on Hewlett Packard's emerging plans to utilize Linux for Technical Workstations, in addition HP-UX and NT. Topic areas will include the value proposition presented by Linux and market areas where it may have the greatest impact. Linux/IA-64: Preparing Linux for the Next Millennium The IA-64 architecture being co-developed by HP and Intel is intended to become the commodity computing platform for the next millennium. Interest in IA-64 has been widespread and has resulted in endorsements from all major players in the computing industry, including (in alphabetical order) Compaq, HP, Intel, SCO, SGI, and Sun. For competitive reasons, the full architecture will remain a closely guarded secret until IA-64-based systems are generally available. This creates a bit of a dilemma for the open source community because it means that Linux development cannot start until systems are widely available. To alleviate this situation, a few researchers at HP Labs in Palo Alto decided to investigate what can be done to help accelerate Linux development such that enhancements could be available from day one of the IA-64 computing era. This talk discusses the challenges in bringing Linux to IA-64 and reports on the activities going on at HP Labs that are intended to accelerate this effort. It also covers the current status and the outlook for the future of Linux on IA-64. WDB an Open Source Debugger for HP WDB is a gdb-based debugger released for HP-UX. The talk provides a brief overview of WDB including Linux interoperability. The talk describes experiences in doing open source development for WDB. Where Do You Go From Here? - Linux Resources (If time permits) Andrew will cover resources for finding more about Linux: E.g. Web Pages, Newsgroups, User Groups, etc. Speakers: Wayne Caccamo, HP Director, Open Source Solutions Operation, ESSG Wayne is the Director of Hewlett-Packard's Open Source Solutions Operation within HP's E-services Division. Wayne has been with HP for 10 years in a variety of marketing roles including Product Management, Business Development, Business Planning, and Solution Program Delivery. Before joining HP, Wayne worked in Management Consulting for Boston-based firms specializing in the Information Technology industry. Wayne holds a Masters degree in Management from Yale University (M.P.P.M '88) and a B.A. in Economics from Tufts University. Michael Tiemann, Founder, Cygnus Solutions Michael Tiemann pioneered the open source business model when in 1989 he founded Cygnus Solutions, the first company with a business built around Open Source technologies. Michael began his career as a significant contributor to the open source software development community. Unable to convince any existing companies to offer commercial support for this new "Open Source" software, he co-founded Cygnus Solutions -- the largest open source software company today. Daryl Knoblock, HP Senior Engineer, Workstation Systems Division Daryl Knoblock is a Senior Engineer in HP's Workstation Systems Division, which manufactures both HP-PA and IA32-based technical workstations. He has worked in HP R&D for 27 years in both engineering and management roles and is currently active in system software strategy and planning. Dave Mosberger, HP Member Technical Staff, HP Labs David Mosberger is a member of the technical staff at HP Labs, where he is working on Internet- and Linux-related projects. His research interests are in high-performance Internet systems, operating systems, and computer architecture. He holds a professional degree as an electronics engineer, an HTL Diploma (B.Sc. degree) in computer science from HTL Brugg-Windisch, Switzerland, and M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in computer science from University of Arizona. He is a member of ACM, IEEE Computer Society, and USENIX. Mike Vermeulen, HP Project Manager, Debugger Products Mike Vermeulen is a project manager responsible for HP's debugger products.
