Dear Colleagues:

There is a scheduled Faculty Meeting tomorrow, Reading Day, Tuesday,
April 27 at 10: 15. Your presence and your vote are needed.

The implementation document for the UT Board of Trustees' new tenure
policy is coming up for a vote again. If you believe we should vote for
the implementation policy, ask yourself the following questions:

 - Is the Board's tenure policy and subsequent implementation in the
best interests of this faculty?

-Do we really believe that the Board's new policy, or the
implementation document strengthen tenure?

-Was this new tenure policy created with full consultation of this
faculty, in an ethical, professional and collegial manner?

-Do you believe that the notion of tenure remains untainted as a result
of the changes made by the UT Board?

-Should the Faculty pass the implementation document because of fear of
terrible consequences, and devious punitive measures?

 - Why is the administration so eager for us to pass an implementation
to a policy which we had no hand in shaping?

-Why is the implementation not mandated, just as the Board's new tenure
policy was mandated in June 1998?

Why we should vote No to the implementation policy:

-Because if we believe the Board's tenure policy to be unjust and
heavy-handed, to cooperate with its implementation would be dishonest.

-Because all our requests to change, ammend, or palliate the language
of the Board's tenure policy have been rejected by UT.

-Because we should maintain an ethical posture and not yield to
something we know to be wrong in principle.

-Because by voting on an implementation procedure we would be
validating the Board's tenure policy in spite of our reservations.

 - Because we should disabuse ourselves from the social fiction that the
new tenure policy and its implementation will be enforced in a collegial
atmosphere.

-Because the Faculty already voted "NO," and there are not enough
changes in the document that merit new consideration.

-Because a petition signed by 183 members of the tenured faculty to
delay the adoption of the new tenure policy was denied by UT.
