However, the object of the exercise at hand is to allow management access to financial archive information generated on the HP3000. These records date back to 1990 and are all basically spool files output to disc first and then retained. The advantage of the approach that we have taken is that all of this data is now readily available without having to schedule special jobs or modifying any of our job files or report programs. It is a zero impact solution. If we were to undertake to convert these files to PDF then this would require transferring each of them to a PC, and there are multiple reports for every month since November 1990. Then each file would need to be distilled. Then each would have to be put back onto the HP3000. However, the existing files and file format need to be retained as well. Then we would need to set up a procedure, undoubtedly manual, that would do the same thing for every month to come. This is not a zero impact solution. Despite my natural inclination to avoid hard work, I'll probably bang out a java applet to do what I want. I've got a skeleton done already. > At any rate, Jim, how are you doing with your Adager MemoCubes? It's funny you should say that!** My daughter found my last Guatemalan Cube (Interex Detroit 86) in my desk at home only last week. As I cast about for it in vain as I write this it appears that this has gone the way of all flesh. If you wish to send me one I am more than willing to accept it. The visionary company owner is asleep upstairs. All husbands work for their wives, but I have convinced mine to pay me. By the way, the .exrc that Brian Duncombe sent me does indeed map the arrow keys to move the cursor inside the POSiX shell vi. But I prefer Qedit. A user, your name escapes me and I am at home so I don't have your original message to refer to, provided a useful command sequence to mimic a ! functionality. But a native implementation of the ! in the shell would be a really nice touch for Qedit. And I know that Robelle delights in "nice touches" with their products.
