If you would use File TAPE;DEV=8 versus FILE TAPE;DEV=TAPE then the reply would be a Y/N not an LDEV number. Another, better method would to be to use labeled tapes for backups. This would eliminate the reply altogether. As for once the reply is made, all you can do is repeated ABORTIO commands. This will usually cause the backup program to abort.
