Maybe these companies have developed this *sneaky* policy to keep their
existing programmers on their toes. It's probably proven itself to be an
easy and cheap means of motivation capable of squeeeeezing the last grams
of effort out of 'em.

Sounds like : "Hey, never mind bonuses and pep talks and all that. We'll
have no fat cats around here. Let's run an add that matches their job
description. That'll shake them up a bit."

This actually a reply to Stan Sieler's post about sites that "eat"
programmers:

How many of us know of sites in our area that have developed
"reputations"?

I can think of a site in Riverside, CA that swallows PowerHouse
progammers whole, but at least its a VAX shop,

and there's a place in Pico Rivera, CA that has had an ad in the paper
for years.
