A couple of days ago I asked if 928s were supposed to recover from a power-fail just as all other HP3000s I've ever worked with have. I contacted HP's Customer Advantage Center (1-800-637-7740), and Bob Lulich found and faxed me Subsetion 2.1 from the "HP 3000 900 Series Computer Systems Configuration Guide" (November 1995). On page 2-8 of said subsection is the following: -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Power Protection The HP 3000 Series 9x8LX/RX system comes standard with one deskside 600 VA HP PowerTrust Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), product A2941AZ. Optionally, the HP 3000 Series 9x8LX/RX can be ordered with a deskside 1300 VA UPS, a rackmounted 1.5 kVA UPS, a rackmounted 1.8 kVA UPS, or a rackmounted 3.0 kVA UPS. See Section 4.3 and 4.4, "Power Protection and Cabinets for the HP 3000 Business Systems” for more information. The UPS provides power protection to the SPU cabinet which includes the CPU board, all internal peripherals, memory, and the Series 700 system console (the DTC is not protected by the standard UPS). The HP PowerTrust UPS provides a minimum of 15 minutes of uninterrupted power after normal AC power has been interrupted for the HP 3000 Series 9x8LX/RX systems. *This is similar to the battery backup unit on other HP 3000 systems.* MPE/iX 5.0 provides the HP PowerTrust UPS Monitor/iX for the management of HP PowerTrust UPS on the HP 3000 Series 9x8LX/RX systems. The HP PowerTrust UPS Monitor/iX detects all incoming AC power failures on the HP 3000 Series 9x8LX/RX system and reports all power failure events to the HP 3000 system logs and to the system operator (HP PowerTrust UPS Monitor/iX does not manage "non-HP UPSs"). The HP PowerTrust UPS Monitor/iX maintains communication with the HP PowerTrust UPS via an RS-232 connection to the Series 9x8LX/RX processor card. If all components of the HP 3000 Series 9x8LX/RX system are power protected, then normal operation and/or system shutdown can be accomplished during the 15 minutes of power protection. *UPS technology is superior to battery backup solutions included in previous platforms because it can protect everything in the SPU bay plus the system console.* -------------------------------------------------------------------------- So there's the definitive answer (our VAR deleted the PowerTrust from our order because we planned on mounting the 928 in a cabinent that already had a PowerTrust for the new 2 gig disk drives). I guess I have a knee-jerk reaction sometimes... oh well. Thanks again to everyone that replied. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- My mind is my own, as are my ideas and opinions. My heart, body, and soul, however, all belong to others. Tim. --------------------------------------------------------------------------
