If you "really" want the console, then what you need to do is enable the "remote console" access by issuing the "ER" (enable remote) command from the maintenance mode prompt (hit <cntrl><B> from Ldev 20). You may also need to configure the baud rate, parity, etc. which can be accomplished with the "CO" command. Following that, plug your modem into the remote access port (in normal mode it is usually Ldev 21, so I'm assuming that's the port your already using), and again at the CM> prompt, issue the "UL" (unlock remote) command (just in case :). When the remote is enabled and unlocked (which can be verified from Ldev 20 when at the CM> prompt by checking if REMOTE: enabled is displayed in the status line at the bottom of the display), you can become the physical console by hitting the <BREAK> key. At that point, you ARE LDEV 20, not 21. If someone at the actual console hits the <BREAK> key, they get the console back (kind of like ping pong!). When you are not the console, you do get all output displayed back to you so you can monitor what the other console is doing without being able to do anything yourself until you hit <BREAK>. A couple of caveats: 1. Make sure you use a proper cable that supports full modem signals. That way, if you loose the connection (even if you had Ldev 20), the console reverts back. 2. There is an option when you enable the remote access port to place a password on that port. DO IT! Otherwise, anyone who happens to get ahold of that phone number when the remote is enabled can do some not so grand things to your system! I have used this ability to bring systems up and down remotely without any problems. Openview System Manager also makes use of this feature to allow operators to remotely manage systems (it calls this "Control Console"). If you have any questions about it, give me a call. I do alot of work from home via modem, and would like to install software updates this way. I discovered that even though I "took" the console to Ldev 21, I couldn't issue a CNTL-A reply command. What I want to do is mount the DAT update tape in Ldev 7 before I leave for the weekend. Then, from home, I want to dial in, restore the tape (CNTL-A reply pin, ldev#) and then stream the various update jobs needed. I thought I heard something when we first got this machine about how this could be done. I was even under the impression that I could do a system shutdown and restart via modem. Can someone clue me in on the possibilities of this happening, and how? Many thanks.
