The best way to get it is on CD. The Slackware CD is only about $50. If you download from the internet, you must transfer about 26 megabytes and then use a downloaded utility to make about 20 floppy disks before you can start the install. When you consider your time, the CD is the better way to go. If you decide to download, FTP to sunsite.unc.edu and look in \pub\Linux or \pub\unix\Linux. There are text files to explain how to get started. Another option is the book "Linux Unleashed" from Sams publishing. It includes the Slackware CD and a good introductory text for $50. You should try to get kernel release 1.2.13. Note that the CDs have their own release numbers that are different from the kernels. For example, something labeled "slackware 2.2.1" is something like kernel 1.2.4 bundled with many important non-kernel programs. In my experience, the kernel version is more important that the versions of the other stuff on the CD. --George George Reimonn, [log in to unmask] Director, Information Systems, Providence Medford Medical Center ______________________________ Reply Separator _________________________________ Subject: LINUX HOW TO DOWNLOAD A FREE VERSION FOR PC Author: [log in to unmask] at Internet-Gateway Date: 9/19/95 3:46 PM Can anyone tell me how to load down a free version LINUX for the PC.
