If they (?) had adopted this naming convention for file transfers, we'd have FTPR and FTPD. LPR is what you have at the client end to send spoolfiles from your machine to a remote printer. LPD is the process the receives spoolfiles from the network and submits them to the local printing queues. Both protocols are typically supported on Unix systems. Quest Software and others have software that supports both - so that the HP3000 (using the LPD process) can receive spoolfiles from other systems running an LPR process, and will send spoolfiles from HP3000 print queues to remote systems or printers that support LPD. Note: you can get nework-wise printers that act as LPD servers, without any controlling "computers" (in the traditional sense). In other words, they have sufficient smarts on-board to support the protocol. I know the latest Jet-Direct cards support this, as do a variety of other printers like Qume. ---- Jim "seMPEr" Wowchuk Internet: [log in to unmask] Vanguard Computer Services Compu$erve: 100036,106 _--_|\ Post: PO Box 18, North Ryde, NSW 2113 / \ Phone: +61 (2) 888-9688 \.--.__/ <---Sydney NSW Fax: +61 (2) 888-3056 v Australia
