I think the best thing is to not get stuck on silly things like this.
Whether its called _MPEXL_SOURCE or something else really doesn't make
any difference, and we're better off debating real work issues.
 
I guess "MPEXL" is a little dated, so we could go with "MPEIX" or even
simpler would be just "MPE".
 
I vote for #define _MPE.  I don't really like the underscore, but if you
like it that is fine.  It also minimizes typing (I'm lazy, I guess)...
