If you're going iX to iX this works already.  The problem is when there is an
intermediate system, and more precisely when are MPE file attributes relevant?
Un*x has the concept of binary/ascii, but even an MPE traditional ASCII file
is not a traditional Un*x ASCII file.
 
The problem is compounded looking at mail systems.  But that has been said.
 
Just to keep things in focus, DEC's VMS and most all IBM platforms suffer
from the same pains (OS_specific file attributes).
