Here at Boeing, we use SITE numbers. As an example, our machine is SITE116. That means it is the 116th HP3000 purchased by Boeing. We started out on SITE17 (a Series III), migrated up to a Series 70 (SITE77) with a Series 37 backup (SITE 85) and are now on a Series 980/100 (SITE116). These site numbers do not include board upgrades. Our 980 used to be a 950, but the SITE number was still 116. We also use SITE number for our HP9000s. These numbers are in the form 8xxx. Numbers for out PC servers are formatted like so: SRV07AUB; where SRV (or SR) indicates it's a server; 07 (or 139) is the server number within Boeing, and AUB is a location identifier (in this case, Auburn). Mainframes have a name that indicates its location and use. For instance, AGDB stands for Auburn General DataBase. I know the thoughts expressed here are my own because no one else would claim them!
