We use lots of escape sequences. We also change the read terminator to ESC by using by setting either binary mode or transparent mode (I don't remember). This has a problem over a PAD. We've found a way around our problem by creating a PAD profile which has data forwarding enabled. This means that it doesn't buffer characters at the PAD. I don't know if this is relevant to your situation. The folks at the HP response center have been very helpful once we isolated the problem.
