This is a time and money question.  The answer is anywhere from sub-second
to dismal depending on which database engine you use and which features of
those databases you choose.  With Oracle, DB2 or SQL Server if you are
willing to index the database properly and avail yourself of some advanced
features that come with them and, in some cases,  if you throw enough
hardware at the problem it can be very fast.  On the other hand, even with
those products if you do default installations and conversions it could
possibly be very slow.
