OK, I have to take exception to one of the answers:

While that answer is true, that's not what was asked.  The question was
"Who was the first American citizen to be elected president?"  It didn't
say "Citizen from birth."  I must assume that as soon as the new nation
was formed, George Washington was a citizen of it.

Good point.  A better question would be, 'Who was the first president
to have been born an American Citizen?'
