Actually, there is a command called EXITONERROR.  Issue the command before
your open.  As FTP is processing, it will end the program whenever there is
an error.  At that time, you can check the FTP@ vars.

You are correct, FTP does use the variables.  However since it will not
exitonerror, any command (other than quit) that is successful after a
command that fails causes the variables look like everything went well.
