As they say, there are ways and there are ways. The newsgroup gateway is very flexible and we are reasonably so:) If folks find value in the proposition (feel free to e-mail me directly with your heartfelt pleas for gating the OpenMPE list to Usenet), we'll be happy to consider performing the service. Off the top of my nut, I can think of a few possibilities: 1) Gate the OpenMPE list to comp.sys.hp.mpe only. (meaning no posting from Usenet to the OpenMPE list) This would provide read-only access to the list from Usenet, but doesn't help folks who'd like to post to the OpenMPE list from Usenet. This is easy to do, but provides the least functionality. 2) Create a bi-directional gateway between comp.sys.hp.mpe and the OpenMPE list. This would allow folks to both read and post, but is the most work for us. We would have to come up with a scheme to ensure that newsgroup posts destined for the OpenMPE list would not also be passed along to 3000-L. This would probably involve users tagging all OpenMPE-intended message with "OPENMPE" somewhere in the subject. For messages brought over from the mailing list, we would add the "OPENMPE" (so that replies to existing topics would be predestined for the OpenMPE list). Any message not so tagged would end up on 3000-L and expose the writer to great derision and considerable humiliation. There may be other options, but we'll have to think about them. 3) Create a new newsgroup and gate the OpenMPE list bi-directionally. This is both really easy and ridiculously difficult. The easy part is that we just have to flip a couple of switches in our existing gateway code to accomplish this. The difficult part is creating the new newsgroup. The formal process for newsgroup creation takes a couple of months or more. We're also open to any other suggestions folks might have. Please remember to let me know if you're even interested in this service so we can see if it's worth taking further.
