I have been telecommuting for 6 years now, dialing into a Shiva Rover ( which I gather is a modem bank) and going through SecuRemote to access the HP3000. I use Reflections. My company pays for a extra phone line and for the associated costs, which can be high, since it is a long distance call. Dial-up access to the HP has worked like a charm for me all these years. The only problem I have is when I need to transfer large files. Where I live, on an island, the only high-speed internet access is through satellite, which I have had for about 6 months now, using it mainly for email and internet. Recently the network engineer who manages SecuRemote for our org, told me that if I could get a static IP address, I would be able to work on the HP using the satellite. I would also be able to access the org's network drives, work on PeopleSoft, Business Objects, and pretty much anything I wanted to do, according to him. And thereby, eliminate a lot of costs. Earthlink says "no static IP addresses are possible" through them. Many times I have attempted to find out the "real scoop" on alternatives to dialing in. And I can never get a straight answer. I've been told that SecuRemote is incompatible with any high-speed internet access, not just satellite. Then I was told by Earthlink that if I had cable, it would work fine. 1. Does anyone out there know the "real truth" on this subject? 2. Does any provider of satellite access offer a static IP address? 3. If I had a static IP address, would that solve the SecuRemote issue? 4. Would I be able to connect to the HP and all those other wonderful things and avoid the costs of long distance and the trials of slow-speed? Thanks, I know this is lengthy. * To join/leave the list, search archives, change list settings, * * etc., please visit http://raven.utc.edu/archives/hp3000-l.html *
