Dr. Shela Van Ness of Sociology, Anthropology and Geography was recently awarded $53,431 from the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention to continue the Healthy Lifestyles Program. In this program, Dr. Van Ness works with students attending Orchard Knob Middle School in an effort to improve academic achievement and delinquency by offering free tutoring and providing speakers, videos and written materials for all members of the community, including students and parents. The program has enjoyed considerable success. In almost four years, the program has worked with 620 students. Among those students, 96% have finished middle school, substance abuse has declined, and students' grade point averages have increased. The Healthy Lifestyle program works in collaboration with the local Army National Guard, Gear Up, and the Jump Start mentoring program to share resources and help as many students as possible. Please join us in congratulating Dr. Van Ness for her efforts to make a valuable impact in Chattanooga's inner-city community.
